Our Story

A natural extension of a lifetime of craftsmanship.

ORIGIN | BY DESIGN was founded by Sean Wood, bringing together a lifelong passion for craftsmanship, an appreciation for extraordinary timbers and a desire to create furniture with its own distinctive character.

The inspiration began with remarkable Australian Eucalyptus hardwoods reclaimed from New Zealand's historic wharves. Captivated by their history, exceptional quality and natural beauty, Sean saw an opportunity to give these extraordinary materials a new life.

From that inspiration, the WHARF Collection was born.

A collection of rare provenance

Each WHARF dining set is individually designed and handcrafted, preserving the character and history of its reclaimed timber.

Only five dining sets will be created from each verified wharf provenance, individually numbered and made to order, with documentation authenticating the timber's origin.

Every piece is unique, combining the natural beauty of historic hardwoods with contemporary architectural steel detailing.

A foundation built on experience

A qualified craftsman and experienced joinery manufacturer, Sean brings extensive expertise across commercial and residential projects.

For more than a decade, he has owned and developed Creative Kitchens & Interiors, a business established in 1984. Alongside his skilled team, Sean has continued to build its reputation for exceptional design and craftsmanship, recognised through eight years of Most Trusted awards.

That same dedication to quality, precision and thoughtful design is the foundation of ORIGIN.

Crafted for a place in your home

ORIGIN | BY DESIGN is an exciting addition to Sean's established design and manufacturing work, bringing his passion for exceptional timbers and handcrafted furniture to life.

Alongside the heritage-inspired WHARF Collection, the FORM Collection celebrates the natural beauty of Australian hardwoods through original, individually handcrafted furniture designs.

For Sean, every piece is an opportunity to create something exceptional — furniture with character, individuality and a lasting place in beautiful New Zealand homes.

Distinctive timber. Considered design. Crafted to endure.
